Dual access can mean faster connections, greater coverage and no international roaming charges.
One choice simply isn't a choice. In a fast-paced world, you need multiple access types whenever you're on the move. That's why the iPass Mobile Office service for enterprise workers and the iPassConnect™ mobility service for individual users support dual-mode mobile phones, which have built-in 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Under ideal conditions, the mobility afforded by 3G is fantastic. But sometimes Wi-Fi makes a lot more sense:
Higher speed and performance. Web sites are growing increasingly feature-rich and data-heavy. Your network connection has to keep up. Today's 3G mobile broadband typically provides best-case data speeds of 500kbps to 800kbps—and only modem-like speeds outside of metropolitan areas. Compare this to Wi-Fi, which offers more consistent, higher speeds. The choice is clear. In fact, Wi-Fi is fast enough to support a wide array of applications—from checking email and viewing attachments to browsing the Web and instant messaging colleagues and friends.
Lower cost and more cost predictability. Currently, unlimited 3G access is expensive. You have to pay to play—that's especially the case when traveling internationally.
Ubiquitous network coverage. 3G mobile broadband doesn't always work deep inside of some buildings and connections can be slow outside of metropolitan areas. Not to worry. High-speed Wi-Fi access is often available in these situations—inside hotels, convention centers and office buildings, for example.
International standard. The functionality of your 3G device doesn't always follow you across international borders. There are several different standards, so even if you are willing to pay the very high roaming costs (often dollars per megabyte), your device just may not be able to make a connection. Wi-Fi is a global standard for wireless LANs in the workplace, public spaces and homes. iPass supports Wi-Fi on devices running Windows Mobile 6, Windows Mobile 5, Symbian S80 and Symbian S60, with planned support for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch, RIM's Blackberry, Google's Android, and other major platforms.
Updates to iPassConnect Mobility Manager
Today, iPass offers a number of advancements to its iPassConnect™ mobility manager that make Wi-Fi as well as 3G connections a breeze:
Auto-connect to both iPass and personal Wi-Fi networks. The iPassConnect mobility manager automatically connects business users and consumers alike to Wi-Fi networks they access on a regular basis, such as those at home, in the office and at their favorite coffee shop.
Improved power management for handheld devices. Administrator-defined session timers save precious handheld power—as does suspending Wi-Fi scanning and auto-connect functions when devices go into power-saving mode.
New architecture. The latest iPassConnect mobility manager features shorter launch times and quicker connections with a smaller footprint on devices. With the mobility manager's auto-detect feature, the directory became redundant and was therefore eliminated, further reducing the amount of disk space and memory required.
Choose iPass for Wi-Fi
When you want fast, reliable and secure wireless broadband connections, Wi-Fi makes clear sense for handhelds and smartphones. And for market-leading functionality and coverage when you're near a hotspot, iPass is your best choice for Wi-Fi—hands down.
