Executive Team

A diverse and experienced management team directs and executes iPass' market strategies, technical initiatives and the company's fast-paced growth.

Evan L. Kaplan, President and Chief Executive Officer

Evan L. Kaplan was elected as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective in mid-November 2008. He brings to iPass nearly two decades of experience providing enterprises with IP-based communications services.

Earlier, Evan served as CEO and President of Aventail Corporation, a Seattle-based network communications company, which was acquired by Sonicwall, Inc. in July 2007. He launched Aventail from his home in 1996. It was one of the first early infrastructure companies to deliver software-based technology as a service and served blue chip enterprise clients including IBM, Kraft, Dupont, Verizon and AT&T.

Prior to Aventail, Evan led product management and business development functions at WRQ, Inc., a Seattle software company. He also served as Senior Program Manager for Proximity Indication and Control Systems with Crane Aerospace.

Evan has been voted one of Network World's 50 Most Powerful People in the Networking Industry. He was recognized as Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in the Pacific Northwest. He has served as a board member for the Young Presidents Organization; the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Washington; the Washington Software Association (now WTIA); and the Networld + Interop industry trade show. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Trusera Corporation and the advisory boards of Mpire, Xoopit, CityID, Terra Technology and Standard Renewables.

Evan earned an MBA degree from the University of Washington.

 

Steven Gatoff, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Steven Gatoff, iPass Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the company's global finance, accounting, treasury and investor relations functions. Steven joined iPass in 2009 and brings a unique combination of strong accounting and controls acumen, tier-1 investment banking experience and an accomplished track record of in-house financial leadership. Steven has nearly 20 years of leadership in building and overhauling organizations, scaling operations and driving shareholder value for technology and telecommunications companies.

Prior to joining iPass, Steven served as Senior Vice President, Finance for United Online, Inc., a $1 billion consumer Internet provider, where he improved operations and systems to drive profitability and growth within the company's portfolio. Prior to that, Steven was Vice President and Controller of Sterling Commerce, Inc. a leading provider of enterprise and business process integration and supply chain management applications, where he restructured the company's worldwide accounting organization to drive business process improvements and scale infrastructure in support of more efficient operations and growth. Prior to Sterling Commerce, Steven was Vice President, Finance and Treasurer of VeriSign, Inc., the S&P 500 Internet infrastructure and communications services company, where he drove the build-out and value-add focus of the company's treasury, corporate finance and investor relations operations.

Prior to VeriSign, Steven spent eight years in investment banking with Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston and Bear Stearns where he focused on the telecommunications and technology sectors, executing numerous debt and equity capital markets financings, M&A transactions and strategic advisory engagements. Additionally, Steven was a financial analyst at Wells Fargo Bank and a senior audit accountant at Deloitte & Touche earlier in his career.

Steven is a Certified Public Accountant and received his BS in Business Administration/Accounting, with honors, from the University of Vermont and his MBA in Finance, with honors, from Columbia University.

 

Nick Hulse, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales

Nick Hulse is responsible for worldwide direct and channel sales for of all iPass products and services. Nick has over two decades of experience spanning sales, operations and marketing, having built strong channel, distribution, partner and professional services programs for a number of software and service companies.

Before joining iPass, Nick was Executive Vice President, Worldwide Field Operations, for Tumbleweed Communications, a leader in secure Internet communication solutions, where he was instrumental in growing the company's customer base by expanding into the new verticals and market segments and developing new international territories. Nick also led sales for Microsoft's Exchange Hosted Services Group, and was Senior Vice President of Sales for FrontBridge Technologies, a managed messaging services company which was sold to Microsoft in 2005 for more than $200 million. Under Hulse's leadership at FrontBridge, the company grew to over 5000 customers in 36 months with revenues in excess of $75 million. During his career Nick has also held executive management positions at Cybertek Holdings, Epoch Internet, ARIS Corporation, and New Horizons Learning Centers.

Nick holds a degree in Marketing and Finance from Northumberland University in the United Kingdom.

 

Jay Patel, Senior Vice President, Product Development

As Senior VP of Product Development, Jay Patel drives the evolution of iPass' next-generation service delivery platform and the development of enterprise connectivity services for new and existing markets. He brings more than 25 years experience building software for a variety of markets, from personal computers to Internet services. Jay also possesses strong expertise in security systems, rapid-development techniques and managing global engineering teams.

Most recently, Jay served as Vice President of Engineering for VeriSign, Inc., a trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world. At VeriSign, Jay directed development of the company's security services product lines and served in a variety of software development and technical leadership roles for more than 11 years. Prior to Verisign, Patel held related software development and leadership positions at Taligent, Apple Computer and other Silicon Valley technology companies.

Jay has a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Bombay University and a master's degree in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.

 

Steven Wastie, Senior Vice President, Marketing

As Senior Vice President of Marketing, Steven Wastie is responsible for evolving iPass' corporate strategy, ensuring the development of new capabilities, services, pricing, and messaging consistent with this strategy, and effectively promoting the company and its services to prospects, customers, partners and other stakeholders. With over 15 years of global marketing and general management experience, Steven has a consistent track record of building and managing teams that deliver results. He has demonstrated strategic and operational success in outbound marketing, product management and sales roles in highly competitive markets worldwide.

Before joining iPass, Steven was Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Rohati Systems, Inc. a network and cloud security company. Previously he held senior marketing positions at several technology leaders. At Juniper Networks he served as Vice President of Worldwide Enterprise and Managed Services Marketing. Prior to that he was Vice President of Marketing at enterprise content management vendor Hummingbird and Vice President and General Manager at Inktomi. He also held marketing and product management positions with Netscape and AT&T Online services.

Steven holds a B.A. (Hons) in Business Studies and Marketing from London Guildhall University.

 

William (Bill) Garvey, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Bill Garvey manages the iPass legal team. He plays a key role in driving corporate strategies, setting policies and developing standards and practices across the company. As iPass conducts business with large corporations worldwide, Bill oversees vital regulatory and governmental relations efforts, and the legal review of all major contract negotiations.

For the past 12 years Bill has served as general counsel at a number of technology companies, including ShoreTel, Inc. a manufacturer of VOIP business communication systems, Rackable Systems, Inc. a computer server manufacturer and Actuate Corporation, an enterprise reporting and business intelligence software company. He has led companies through initial public offerings, secondary offerings, acquisitions and patent litigation.

Bill holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, a B.S. from the United States Military Academy and is a member of the California Bar Association.

 

Barbara Nelson, Chief Technical Officer

As Chief Technical Officer, Barbara Nelson drives the long-term development of the iPass platform, products and services through leadership of the architecture, engineering and network operations functions. Previously, Barbara served as Vice President Architecture and Design, where she was responsible for researching new technologies initiatives. She also architected the iPassConnect™ client, the company's award-winning software that seamlessly integrates connectivity to a wide variety of access methods (Wi-Fi, dial, 3G mobile data, etc.) with a rich set of mobility management capabilities.

Barbara has more than 20 years of engineering experience in voice and data communications, mobile agents and international communications standards. She joined iPass in 2002 after serving as a senior architect at Extricity Software, a provider of business-to-business integration applications. Before Extricity, Barbara spent seven years at General Magic, developing a patented mobile agent platform, and building a carrier-based service including voice user interface (VUI) and graphic user interface (GUI) software. Prior to General Magic, Barbara worked at Retix, a software company developing platform-independent solutions for OSI protocols. While at Retix, Barbara chaired the X.400 Special Interest Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Barbara holds a bachelor's degree with honors in computer science from University College Dublin, Ireland.
